Challan Won’t Suffice Anymore—DL Points to Be Deducted: Centre Rolls Out New ‘Graded’ Driving Licence System

Central govt overhauls driving licence (DL) system to boost road safety. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced ‘grade-based DL’ soon—licenses act like report cards with points deducted for violations.​

How Points System Works

• Fixed points assigned to each DL.

• Violations (beyond fine) deduct points.

• Threshold breach: 6-month suspension.

• Repeat/serious cases: Permanent cancellation.

Targets overspeeding, mobile use, wrong-side driving, drunk driving.

Aim: Enforce Accountability

Drivers can’t just pay fines—must follow rules to save license. Addresses 5L accidents/1.8L deaths yearly. Scheme launches shortly.​
