Chandigarh, November 15: In the Bihar assembly elections, the NDA achieved an overwhelming victory, but the BJP still saw setbacks in several constituencies. Out of the 101 seats it contested, 12 of its candidates were unable to win — some losing by razor-thin margins. At the same time, the Congress, which fielded 61 candidates, managed to secure only six seats but succeeded in holding its ground in a few key battles despite the strong pro-NDA momentum.
A number of BJP candidates were defeated by just a few hundred votes. Others lost by larger margins, including in seats where their rivals from the RJD, AIMIM, BSP, or Congress surged ahead. In places like Forbesganj, Chanpatia, and Dhaka, the contests were extremely close, with leads swinging back and forth before the final tally edged in favour of opposition candidates. In Ramgarh, the BJP candidate fell short by only 30 votes, marking one of the narrowest defeats of the election.
Some losses were more decisive — such as in Baisi and Kochadhaman, where opposition parties recorded strong wins. Even prominent BJP faces could not overcome local anti-incumbency or shifting caste and community dynamics.
On the other hand, the Congress, though far behind the major alliances in seat tally, recorded six victories. These wins came from constituencies where their candidates either built small but steady leads or benefited from multi-cornered contests that split the vote. In seats like Kishanganj and Araria, Congress nominees won by clear margins, while in a few others — including Chanpatia and Forbesganj — their triumphs came after tight battles against BJP rivals.
Overall, the results underline that even in a sweeping election where the NDA dominated, local factors and constituency-specific equations allowed several opposition candidates to prevail — while also contributing to surprising defeats for a dozen BJP nominees.
