Bikram Majithia sent to judicial custody in disproportionate assets case

Mohali, July 6

A Mohali court today remanded senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia to judicial custody following the conclusion of his extended four-day vigilance remand in a disproportionate assets case. He will be sent to New Nabha Jail now and the next hearing in this case will be on July 19. Advocate Preetinderpal Singh stated that, as per the law, if required, Majithia can be taken on remand even from jail.

The court appearance, marked by tight security with heavy police deployment saw the Punjab Vigilance Bureau present Majithia before the duty magistrate. The bureau is investigating allegations of Majithia laundering over ₹540 crore in drug money.

The court’s decision to send Majithia to judicial custody comes after the Vigilance Bureau cited new evidence, including alleged benami properties in Mashobra, Shimla, Gorakhpur and unaccounted cash deposits and foreign transactions. Majithia’s legal team, led by Advocate Arshdeep Singh Kler, argued that the case is a “political vendetta” by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government, claiming no new evidence was presented. A petition challenging Majithia’s arrest and remand as illegal remains pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
