After the Sec 2 Panchkula incident in which the wife of a retired colonel was murdered and the colonel was seriously injured by attackers, the safety of the elderly in Panchkula has become a hot topic of discussion.
Senior citizens have now demanded that the safety of the elderly in Panchkula should be ensured by following the beat system that is prevalent in Chandigarh. A group of seniors led by senior citizen and social worker Ashok Bhandari Nadir met at Sec 12 here and decided to press for this demand.
Senior citizens Dr. G S Chahal, Avinash Chandra Mehta, Suraj Prakash Vij, Vijay Kumar Sachdeva were also present alongwith Nadir when this demand was made.
Nadir said that he and other senior citizens will submit a memorandum to the Speaker of the Haryana Assembly and key Panchkula Administration officials in this regard. Elaborating further Ashok Bhandari Nadir said that the Panchkula police should make similar arrangements for the safety of the elderly as is done in Chandigarh.
Under this, a beat system should be developed in Panchkula. Along with this, all the beat police personnel should collect data of elderly people living in their area and also take details of any domestic help or list of workers’ who come to do odd jobs at residences of senior citizens. This data needs to be put together on priority, said Nadir.
Ashok Bhandari Nadir added that Panchkula Police should make a card for senior citizens on which the numbers of all the relevant officers are mentioned so that in case of an emergency, senior citizens can call the police.
Another senior citizen Dr. G S Chahal said that the number of retired people in Panchkula is quite high and that the police should form a special squad for their protection.
This squad should remain in constant touch with the elders and keep inquiring about their well-being. He said that he and other like minded senior citizens have also prepared a plan for mapping the elders of Panchkula. This will be of great help to the police, he said.
During the senior citizens’ Sector-12 meet, senior citizen Avinash Chandra Mehta said that the incident that happened in Panchkula was really tragic and that similar incidents have happened in Panchkula before too. It is high time and Panchkula Administration and Police need to wake up from their slumber, he said.
