“Adani issue needs discussion in Parliament”: Congress MP KC Venugopal

New Delhi, November 25

As the first winter session of Parliament commences, the opposition MPs moved adjournment motions to raise the issue of Adani’s indictment in the United States (US) in connection with a “fraud and bribery” case. Congress MP KC Venugopal on Monday said that the Adani issue was an important issue that needs to be discussed in the Parliament.

Venugopal asserted that the government would have to give time because the US government has taken the case very strongly. Parliament remains the forum to take up such issues, he added.

“Certainly, that (Adani issue) is one of the most important issues which Parliament has to discuss. The government has to give the time because the US government has taken the case very strongly, the incident happened in India…Parliament is the forum to take up these issues,” Congress MP Venugopal told ANI.

Speaking on the Leader of Oppositions (LoPs) being invited to speak in the Constitution Day program tomorrow, Venugopal said that this is what the entire opposition deserves. He accused the government of “demolishing” the spirit of the Constitution.

“That is not a demand, that is what we deserved, the entire opposition deserved. When we are talking about the Constitution, the Constitution clearly projects the role of opposition. Along with the treasury branches, the role of the Opposition is also equal as per the constitution. Leader of opposition is a constitutional position. You are celebrating Constitution Day, and demolishing the spirit of the Constitution. You are making it a one-sided show, as a ‘Sarkar’ program. You are demolishing the spirit of the Constitution, which we cannot agree. The entire opposition leaders wrote a letter to the Speaker and Chairman, inviting his attention to this issue and we are thinking that there should be a positive reply from the other side,” the Congress MP said.

Earlier today, Venugopal gave an adjournment notice ahead of Parliament’s winter session to discuss the indictment of the Adani group and to form a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate the alleged bribery charges.

Congress MP Manish Tewari along with Manickam Tagore also wrote a letter to the Secretary General of Lok Sabha, making aware of their intentions to move an adjournment motion to discuss Gautam Adani’s indictment in an alleged “bribery and fraud” case.

Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh has also given a Suspension of Business Notice (under rule 267) to discuss the indictment by a US court.

Before the separate session of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, a joint session of the Parliament was also held, with the Speaker of the House presiding over the session.

The house session will conclude on December 20 and the Parliament is set to have 16 bills for introduction during its session.
