Mohali, July 5
Former Punjab Health Minister and senior Congress leader Balbir Singh Sidhu has condemned the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government’s empty promises of providing uninterrupted power supply to domestic, agricultural, and industrial sectors. He expressed deep concern over the residents of Mohali facing continuous power cuts, stating, “Today, both urban and rural areas of Mohali are facing severe hardships due to unannounced power cuts. People are finding it difficult to cope with the intense heat, while the Punjab government remains indifferent and unconcerned.”
Sidhu further said, “The monsoon has already begun, yet the people of Mohali have received no relief from power cuts. Even today, residents are forced to spend sleepless nights without electricity, and while the situation in urban areas is bad, it is even worse in villages.”
Highlighting the situation of farmers, Sidhu said, “Due to frequent and prolonged power cuts during the paddy sowing season, farmers are facing severe challenges. Moreover, flood-like conditions across Punjab have further disrupted power supply, and it is the farmers and common people who are suffering the most.”
Expressing serious concern over the condition of the state’s thermal power plants, Sidhu stated, “Out of 15 thermal power units in Punjab, 4 have been shut down. Recently, two units—one at the government plant in Ropar and another at the privately run Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL)—were shut down due to technical issues. This is not just a power crisis but a clear proof of the government’s failure. The Bhagwant Mann government is busy with false media propaganda, completely disconnected from ground realities.”
Sidhu further added, “Punjab State Power Corporation Limited is facing a severe financial crisis due to the economic mismanagement of the AAP government. Additionally, there is a significant shortage of employees in the power department, which is preventing the resolution of this crisis.”
Taking a strong dig at the Bhagwant Mann government, Sidhu said, “While Punjab struggles with outages, there are numerous vacancies in the electricity department. Employees are being forced to work 18–20 hours a day, risking their health and lives. I thank these employees for their tireless service and urge the Chief Minister to immediately fill all vacant posts.”
