Former Diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu Appointed Delhi’s New Lieutenant Governor

Former senior Indian diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed Delhi’s new Lieutenant Governor (LG). Per Rashtrapati Bhavan orders, he replaces Vinai Kumar Saxena, now posted as Ladakh’s LG. Originally from Amritsar, Sandhu hails from a prominent Sikh family—his grandfather Sardar Teja Singh Samundri was a founding SGPC member.
Sandhu graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and earned his master’s from JNU. Joined IFS in 1988, served three decades internationally. Key roles: opened Indian Embassy in Ukraine; India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
Gained fame as US Ambassador (2020-2024), elevating India-US strategic/defense ties. Post-retirement, joined BJP, contested 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Amritsar.
As Delhi LG, he’ll oversee national capital administration, development, and Centre-state coordination.
