Trump’s New Diplomacy: Son-in-Law and Friend Handle World’s Biggest Conflicts in Geneva Secret Meetings

Washington/Geneva: February 27, 2026
US President Donald Trump once again bet on his personal trusted aides in global politics. Trump assigned responsibility for resolving the world’s two most dangerous crises—the Russia-Ukraine war and Iran’s nuclear dispute—to his son-in-law Jared Kushner and longtime business friend Steve Witkoff. Both envoys arrived in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday, where they held several high-level and secret meetings within 24 hours.

Tense Series of Geneva Meetings

The meetings in Geneva were extremely hectic. First, Kushner and Witkoff met Iranian officials at the Omani ambassador’s residence. The main objective of this meeting was to forge a new agreement on Iran’s nuclear program to prevent potential attacks by the US and Israel. Immediately after, they met Russian and Ukrainian envoys in different hotels in Geneva. Ukraine now hopes for direct talks with Russia in early March to pave the way for a meeting between President Zelenskyy and Putin.

Trump’s Strategy Stuns Global Experts

Trump’s strategy has stunned diplomatic experts worldwide. Trump relied on his family member and personal friend instead of traditional government institutions like the US State Department. However, many experts believe these two individuals are not experts in such complex issues. Experts say issues like the Russia-Ukraine war and Iran crisis involve many intricacies that people with only a business background may not fully understand.

Questions Over Personal Business Interests

Meanwhile, questions are also being raised about Kushner and Witkoff’s personal business interests. Jared Kushner’s investment firm ‘Affinity Partners’ and Witkoff’s crypto firm have major business ties with Middle East and Arab countries. Opponents allege this could be a conflict of personal interests. Republican Senators have also expressed concern that these individuals are not under any government oversight or Senate approval.

Ukraine Welcomes Initiative

On the other hand, Ukraine has welcomed this initiative. Ukraine’s envoy Olga Stefanishina said she is happy to work with both of them because their president has direct contact with Trump. The White House has also defended them, saying their record of success speaks for itself and their business experience proves helpful in tough talks with world leaders.
