Big Relief for Train Passengers: Fares Cheaper on 10 Trains, ‘Superfast’ Tag Removed
National Desk, February 8, 2026
Indian Railways brings major relief to millions by removing ‘Superfast’ status from 10 key trains across the country. Effective April 13-16, 2026, these will run as regular expresses, directly reducing fares by eliminating superfast surcharges.
No more extra ‘superfast surcharge’:
Sleeper Class: ~₹30 savings per ticket
AC-3 & AC-2: ~₹45 savings per ticket
This benefits daily commuters and middle-class families most.
Railways targeted trains with excessive stops not meeting superfast speed criteria:
Prayagraj Rambag-Howrah Vibhuti Express: Stops at 31 stations en route
Howrah-Kalka Netaji Express (via Prayagraj Jn): Stops at 38 stations total
Note: Train numbers will also change.
Passenger Complaints: Travelers questioned charging superfast fares for trains stopping at every small station without true high speeds.
Fair Pricing: Review found average speeds dropped due to frequent halts, justifying fare rationalization.
Trains to Delhi may face disruptions as rain with thunderstorms expected February 9-10, potentially affecting rail traffic.
