Three-Day Lawyers’ Strike Across Punjab

Published by: Gill Bikram

Lawyers across Punjab have announced a three-day “no-work” strike in protest against various issues. In response, the District Bar Association, Fatehgarh Sahib, staged a dharna today in front of the district court complex, raising three key demands. During the demonstration, lawyers completely halted work, raised slogans against the government and judicial administration, and demanded immediate fulfillment of their demands.

Former President of the District Bar Association, Fatehgarh Sahib, Advocate Amardeep Singh Dharni, speaking at the dharna, strongly opposed the court’s decision to set new dates daily for cases under the guise of an “action plan.” He said these daily adjournments not only create unnecessary pressure on lawyers but also compromise the quality of the judicial process.

Opposition to Village Courts

He further stated that the second major issue is the establishment of “village courts” (gram adalats) every two kilometers across the country. Lawyers believe this system will undermine the role of existing courts and negatively impact the legal profession. Additionally, they vehemently opposed the third demand—appointment of defense lawyers in courts—arguing it could influence the independent legal system.

Warning to Intensify Agitation

During the dharna, lawyers warned that if their demands are not seriously considered, they will intensify their agitation in the coming days. They clarified that this struggle is not just for their own interests but to maintain a strong and balanced justice system.
