Libya Shocker: Muammar Gaddafi’s Son Saif al-Islam Gunned Down – Attackers Stormed Home
Tripoli/Zintan, February 4, 2026: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s late dictator Muammar Gaddafi and once considered the country’s most powerful figure, was assassinated Tuesday. The attack occurred nearly 15 years after his father’s death. According to Xinhua news agency, four masked gunmen stormed Saif’s home in Zintan, western Libya, killing him on the spot.
How the Attack Unfolded
Gaddafi aide Abdullah Othman revealed it was a premeditated conspiracy. The attackers first destroyed CCTV cameras to avoid identification, then opened direct fire. Saif’s team has appealed to the international community and courts for a high-level investigation and stern punishment of the perpetrators.
Who Was Saif al-Islam?
Saif was seen as Muammar Gaddafi’s successor. Key facts:
Education: Studied at London School of Economics (LSE).
Western Face: Once viewed as Libya’s liberal voice maintaining ties with Western nations.
Power Center: Without any official position, he was Libya’s second-most influential figure after his father, leveraging the oil-rich nation’s wealth.
Rebellion and Death Sentence
During the 2011 uprising against Gaddafi’s regime, Saif led a crackdown against rebels. A Tripoli court sentenced him to death in 2015 for war crimes. He was released in 2017 under a general amnesty and had been living secretly in Zintan.
Saif’s killing effectively ends the Gaddafi family’s political influence in Libya. Tensions are expected to rise following this assassination.
