Punjab Weather Update: Bathinda Temp Nears Zero, Orange Alert for Dense Fog and Cold Wave in 11 Districts

Intense cold continues to grip Punjab and Chandigarh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for today (Sunday) across several parts of the state. Snowfall in the hills has triggered a cold wave in the plains, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures.

Temperature Conditions
The coldest spot in Punjab today was Bathinda, where the minimum temperature plunged to 0.8°C. The state’s average maximum temperature is running about 3.6°C below normal, causing chills even during the day.

Fog and Cold Wave Alerts
According to the IMD, the situation could worsen in the following districts:

  • Very dense fog and cold wave: Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala.

  • Dense fog: Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, and Mohali.
Southern Punjab districts like Firozpur, Fazilka, Bathinda, and Mansa are also likely to see dense fog alongside a cold wave.

Weather System
Weather experts attribute this to a Western Disturbance now active as a cyclonic circulation at 1.5 km above sea level over northern Punjab and adjacent areas. Although the moisture-laden trough from the Arabian Sea has weakened, its effects are driving strong cold winds across Punjab’s plains.
