A horrific incident of animal cruelty has surfaced in Jagtial district, Telangana, where around 300 stray dogs were allegedly killed by injecting poison in Pegdapalli village. Animal rights activists’ complaint claims the gruesome act was carried out on orders from the village sarpanch and gram panchayat secretary. The sarpanch had promised to address stray dog issues during elections and hired professionals for this mass killing.
Initial police probe uncovered 70-80 dog carcasses in a single grave, buried 3-4 days ago. Inspector C. Kiran registered an FIR against the sarpanch and secretary under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and IPC sections, citing the case’s gravity. Police await postmortem reports to confirm cause of death.
Shockingly, January has seen multiple such events in Telangana, with nearly 900 dogs killed so far. Earlier cases in Yacharam (100 dogs) and Hanamkonda and Kamareddy districts led to FIRs against several sarpanchs. Animal lovers are outraged, demanding strict action.
