Chandigarh, December 26: The All India Kisan Sabha Haryana has supported the broad-based united campaign comprising Aravallis Bachao Abhiyan and other social organisations to protect the oldest hill ranges of India from the threat of mining in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision on November 20.

The AIKS vice‑president Inderjit Singh blamed the Centre and four BJP‑ruled states for not defending, in the Supreme Court, the long‑term environmental interests and livelihoods of the people of Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

“Kisan Sabha is of the clear view that keeping 90 per cent of Aravallis out from the new, ridiculous definition of hills falling below 100 metres in height and opening them to mining will prove catastrophic,” Singh said.

Aravallis range of hills passes through Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Gurugram, Mahendergarh, Rewari, Nuh and Faridabad districts of Haryana. It is for stopping the South Western winds and causing monsoon rains in the entire region, he said adding that Aravallis have been preventing the Thar deserts from spreading further towards Delhi and Haryana.

The farmers leader said that mining has already been carried out very deep in certain places of Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri districts from the ground level, causing dangerous consequences for agriculture as well as cracks in houses.

The AIKS will coordinate with the broad united front and also take up this crucial issue to the people and make them aware of the dangerous consequences if the mindless mining activity is allowed to be carried out according to the unscientific definition of the Supreme court.

Kisan Sabha warned that it is not the mining alone but private tourism and real estate corporate capital that will make encroachments and finally overtake Aravallis for profit motives at the cost of sustainable livelihoods and availability of fresh air, clean water and healthy soil.

It is even more shocking that government circles attribute findings allegedly done by Forest Survey of India (FSI) that it is only 10% of Aravallis that will be affected by the new definition as the FSI has categorically refuted to have made any such studies, he said.

Meanwhile, social organisations under the banner of the “Aravali Virasat Jan Abhiyan” held a public awareness programme at Tosham Hill to protest the growing threat to the existence of the Aravalli range.

Farmer leader Comrade Omprakash highlighted declining soil fertility and rising diseases due to mining.
