Chandigarh, December 19: SAD candidate Manjinder Singh Bittu, son of former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh who was declared ‘tankhaiya’ by the Akal Takht last week for exonerating Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in 2015, has won the zila parishad election from the Udekaran zone in Muktsar district.
Overall, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) emerged dominant in Muktsar district, the home turf of the Badals, winning seven of the 13 zila parishad zones. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won five seats and the Congress managed just one. The lone Congress seat was won by Paramjit Kaur, wife of former MLA from Bhucho Mandi, Pritam Singh Kotbhai, from the Kotbhai zone in Gidderbaha.
The SAD also secured a majority in panchayat samiti elections in Muktsar block, winning 17 of 20 zones, and in Lambi block with 20 of 25 zones. The AAP bagged a majority in Malout block by winning 17 of 25 zones and in Gidderbaha block with 14 of 25 zones. The Congress fared poorly, winning eight zones in Gidderbaha and just one in Lambi, while failing to open its account in Muktsar and Malout blocks.
In Bathinda district, of the 17 zila parishad zones, SAD won 13 and AAP four. Of the 137 panchayat samiti zones, SAD won 79, followed by AAP with 35, Congress 15, Independents eight. The BJP failed to win any seat.
In Mansa district, AAP won seven of the 11 zila parishad zones, while SAD secured four. In panchayat samiti poll, the AAP won 37 zones, the SAD 33, the Congress six, Independents nine and the BJP one.
Barnala district saw AAP winning eight of the 10 zila parishad zones, while the SAD won two. In panchayat samiti elections, AAP won 40 zones, SAD 13, Congress seven and Independents five.
In Faridkot district, SAD won five zila parishad zones, AAP four and Congress one. In panchayat samiti elections, SAD won 25 zones, AAP 21, Congress 17 and BJP two, while seven AAP candidates were elected unopposed earlier. AAP faced embarrassment in Kotkapura, the constituency of Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, where it won only three panchayat samiti zones, while SAD and Congress won nine each.
In Moga district, AAP won 11 zila parishad zones, SAD three and Congress one. In panchayat samiti poll, AAP won 56 zones, SAD 19, Congress 17 and Independents eight. Kot Ise Khan block recorded AAP’s best performance with 15 of 16 zones, while SAD dominated Baghapurana with 13 of 25.
In Ferozepur district, Congress won six zila parishad zones, while AAP and SAD won four each, including two Independents backed by gangster-turned-politician Gurpreet Singh Sekhon. In panchayat samiti elections, AAP won 23 zones, Congress 22, SAD 15, BJP three and Independents 12. Earlier, 37 candidates were elected unopposed.
In Fazilka district, AAP won 12 zila parishad zones, while BJP won three and Congress one. This is the home district of state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar. In the Abohar area, BJP won eight of the 16 zones in the Khuian Sarwar panchayat samiti. In the Dalmir Khera zone, the SAD candidate was declared winner through a toss after a tie. In the panchayat samiti elections, AAP won 64 zones, BJP 17, Congress 13 and SAD 11. The SAD however could not win a single zila parishad zone. The results of Sukhera Bodla samiti zone were yet to be declared.
