A major security alert was declared at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad after authorities received an email warning of a bomb onboard an incoming international flight. The Gulf Air flight GF274, arriving from Bahrain to Hyderabad, was immediately diverted to Mumbai as a precautionary measure. This marks the fourth such threat to the airport within the last 23 days.
According to airport officials, the Airport Operations Control Centre (APOC) received the threat email at around 6:50 a.m. on Sunday. The message claimed that a bomb had been planted on the Bahrain-Hyderabad flight that would detonate upon landing. Following standard protocol, the flight was diverted mid-air to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Upon landing in Mumbai, bomb disposal squads, sniffer dogs, and CISF personnel surrounded the aircraft. All passengers were evacuated safely through emergency gates while a detailed inspection of the plane and luggage was carried out. No explosives or suspicious items were found during the sweep.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad police, cybercrime investigators, and the crime branch have launched a probe to trace the IP address of the sender. Early indications suggest the email was a hoax, similar to previous threats received earlier this month. Security across the Hyderabad airport has been tightened, and operations have resumed as normal.
This incident follows a worrying pattern — the fourth bomb threat received by the Hyderabad airport this November alone. The first threat, on November 1, also came via email alleging the presence of a human bomb aboard an IndiGo flight (6E-68) from Jeddah to Hyderabad, falsely linking the threat to LTTE and ISI. Two more threats followed on November 12 and shortly before midnight on November 21-22, targeting multiple airports across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Trivandrum. All the threats were later confirmed to be fake.
Authorities say they are working closely with central agencies to identify the source of these repeated hoax threats. The CISF has stepped up baggage screening and ID checks at Hyderabad airport to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.
