Earthquake in Coral Sea: Magnitude 6 Tremor Jolts Region; Two Indian States Also Feel Mild Quakes

Powerful tremors shook parts of the Coral Sea early Sunday morning, triggering panic across several regions. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale and struck at 4:58 a.m. near Vanuatu, at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers below the surface.

The strong seismic activity in the Coral Sea was followed by smaller quakes in Japan, Myanmar, and India, making it one of the most seismically active days of the month. Fortunately, no casualties or damage have been reported from any of the affected countries.

Japan and Myanmar Also Affected

In Japan, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake jolted the Hokkaido region in the country’s northeast. Residents rushed out of their homes in fear, though authorities confirmed there was no tsunami warning issued. In Myanmar, an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 struck around 4:42 a.m., with its epicenter located 10 kilometers underground.

Mild Tremors in India’s Karnataka and Ladakh

The NCS reported two minor quakes in India — one in Karnataka and another in Ladakh.

In Karnataka, a 3.1 magnitude quake struck at 3:47 a.m., with its epicenter 5 kilometers deep.
In Ladakh, tremors of 3.6 magnitude were recorded at 7:30 a.m., at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Residents in both states felt light shaking, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

A Day of Global Seismic Activity

Experts from NCS noted that the Coral Sea quake resulted from the collision of tectonic plates beneath the ocean floor — a common cause of seismic activity in the Pacific “Ring of Fire” zone.

While Sunday’s events did not cause significant destruction, seismologists have advised coastal regions to remain alert, given the frequent tremors recorded in recent weeks across the Indo-Pacific region.
