Shooting Near Harvard University: Cyclist Opens Fire, Panic Spreads in Cambridge
Washington, October 24, 2025:
Panic gripped the area near Harvard University on Friday night after a cyclist opened fire on another person in Cambridge, Massachusetts. According to police, the suspect — riding a bicycle — shot an individual on Sherman Street before fleeing toward Garden Street.
Authorities immediately launched a manhunt for the unidentified shooter. The Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) and Cambridge Police cordoned off the area and urged residents and students to stay indoors.
Following the incident, Harvard University issued an alert on its official website, stating:
“Cambridge Police report that an unidentified person on a bicycle has just shot another individual on Sherman Street. The suspect is heading toward Garden Street. Please avoid the area and stay in a safe location.”
The university also imposed a temporary shelter-in-place order, advising everyone in nearby dormitories and university buildings to remain indoors. The order was lifted later that night once police confirmed there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
Cambridge Police confirmed that no arrests have been made yet, and the victim’s condition and identity are still unknown. Authorities said there is no continuing danger to the community, but the investigation remains active.
“Please remain alert and report any suspicious activity to HUPD at 617-495-1212,” the university’s emergency alert website advised.
The shooting occurred on Sherman Street, a residential area north of Harvard’s main campus. Witnesses said the cyclist fired one or more shots before speeding away toward Garden Street, which connects North Cambridge to the Radcliffe Quadrangle and Harvard Square.
Emergency services and multiple law enforcement agencies responded immediately. Within 20 minutes of the first alert, police had cleared the area, ensuring the safety of nearby students and residents. Staff members in local residential houses instructed students to remain indoors until the all-clear signal was given.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and collecting eyewitness statements to identify the shooter. Further updates are expected once police confirm the suspect’s description or motive.
