Desh Bhagat University proudly hosted the release of Uth Punjab Sian, the Punjabi translation of A Bureaucrat Recalls, authored by former IAS officer Captain Narinder Singh. The translation was undertaken by Prof. Dharminder Singh, Coordinator of the University’s Centre for Punjabi Language, Folklore, and Culture.
Speaking at the event, University Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh described the book as a significant literary contribution to the Punjab Government’s campaign “Yudh Nashean Virudh” (War Against Drugs). He emphasized that the work aligns with Desh Bhagat University’s vision for promoting transformative literature through translation.
Captain Narinder Singh, in his address, highlighted the book’s wide thematic scope — ranging from the Partition of India, the Sikh Regiment, and Punjab’s representation in the Olympics and Asian Games, to contemporary social issues such as drug addiction, gang violence, youth migration, political corruption, and the criminal-political nexus.
Translator Prof. Dharminder Singh explained that the work goes beyond a literal translation. It thoughtfully adapts Captain Singh’s experiences—as a soldier, administrator, lawyer, and sportsperson—into language that resonates with Punjabi readers grappling with issues like chitta (synthetic drugs), gang warfare, corruption, land and drug mafias, and unaccountable leadership.
Dr. Harsh Sadawarti, Vice Chancellor of DBU, also praised Capt. Narinder Singh, the author of the book, for his remarkable contribution. Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Amarjeet Singh praised the book as a meaningful addition to the Ministry of Education’s Translation Mission, particularly under the UGC’s Pustak Scheme.
The event also recognized the presence of distinguished guests, including Dr Tajinder Kaur Pro-vice Chancellor DBU, Padma Shri Olympians Kartar Singh, Sarwan Singh, Starex University Vice-Chancellor Prof. M.M. Goel, President of Punjabi Lekhak Sabha (Chandigarh) Bhupinder Malik and renowned writer Paul Ajnabi.
The program was conducted by Dr. Renu Sharma, with the vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Ram Singh Gurna.
