Ludhiana, April 22
Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora presided over the annual prize distribution function of SCD Government College, Ludhiana on Monday and congratulated all the students who were honoured on the occasion.
Among the awardees was Harmanbir Singh Waraich, who was named Student of the Year. When it was announced that Harmanbir had written an outstanding paper on the topic of road safety, Arora was so impressed that he invited the student on stage and announced a grant of Rs.5 lakh to support the preparation of a detailed report on road safety.
Arora also offered to support any travel required for the report, stating that the initiative would be duly acknowledged upon completion. He emphasised the urgent need to address road safety, noting that thousands of lives are lost each year due to road accidents. He expressed hope that the report would make a meaningful contribution towards saving human lives. This gesture of encouragement was highly appreciated by the faculty, students, and guests present.
In response to a demand for improving infrastructure, Arora also announced a grant of Rs.30 lakh for the college.
An alumnus of SCD Government College, Arora recalled fond memories from his student days and mentioned that he graduated in 1983. Referring humorously to the college principal’s earlier mention of notable alumni such as Sahir Ludhianvi, Arora said that he hoped his name, along with Kamal Oswal and Daman Oswal of the Oswal Group, would also be mentioned in future college events.
Encouraging students to consider career opportunities within India, Arora remarked that many individuals who had gone abroad are now returning home. He urged students to contribute to society after achieving success, citing his own example of developmental work carried out in Ludhiana during his tenure as an MP.
On the occasion, Arora also honoured academicians Suman Lata, Prof. Ajit Sehgal, Sharanjit Parmar, and Rajiv Sehgal. As a token of affection, he also felicitated Kavya Arora and Guneet Arora. The college principal, Dr. Gursharanjit Singh Sandhu, presented a memento to Arora in appreciation of his continued support.
Earlier, Arora inaugurated a newly constructed multi-purpose hall at the college, built with a Rs.1 crore grant from his MPLAD fund in the previous financial year.
