Ludhiana, April 22
A crucial meeting addressing the growing menace of stray dogs in Ludhiana was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora.
Among those present were Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, Additional Deputy Commissioners Amarjeet Bains and Rohit Gupta, SDMs including Dr. Poonam Preet Kaur, and Municipal Corporation Health Officer Dr. Vipal Malhotra.
The meeting aimed to explore effective solutions to the stray dog issue, with a focus on ensuring the safety of children, the elderly, and the general public from dog bites—while also respecting the sentiments of dog lovers and feeders.
A key objective was to foster a more harmonious coexistence between humans and animals by addressing the root causes of human-street dog conflicts. Strategies discussed included spaying and neutering, rabies vaccination, rescue and rehabilitation of dogs, and community education.
MP Sanjeev Arora instructed the Municipal Corporation to identify a suitable open space for establishing a Dog Sanctuary to house critically injured, sick, or abandoned dogs that cannot fend for themselves.
It was highlighted that implementing a comprehensive approach—combining sterilization, vaccination, rescue efforts, and public awareness—can significantly reduce dog bites, improve public health, enhance animal welfare, and promote empathy in the community.
Describing the gravity of the issue, Arora said that during his visits across Ludhiana, he has repeatedly heard complaints about the stray dog nuisance. He noted that fear of dog attacks is widespread, with bite incidents being reported regularly—posing a serious threat to public safety.
Arora, the Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate for the upcoming Ludhiana (West) assembly election, emphasised that the stray dog problem is a repeated concern raised by citizens during his public meetings. He assured that he is committed to finding a permanent and humane solution.
