Amritsar, January 17
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) held a strong protest outside cinema halls across Punjab to stop the release of Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ film.
The state-wide protest was held on the instructions of the SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami. Seeing the protest by SGPC, the cinema managers decided not to release Emergency film, after which the SGPC ended the protest.
In Amritsar, protests were held at PVR Cinema (Sooraj Chanda Tara), Trillium Mall and Alpha One Mall against the film, which were led by SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan, member Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka, Bhai Ajaib Singh Abhyasi and secretary Partap Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan said that Sikh characters have been portrayed in a wrong way in the ‘Emergency’ film made by Kangana Ranaut, regarding which the SGPC has already registered objections.
He said that it is unfortunate that the Punjab government has not taken any step to stop the film till now. He welcomed the decision of the cinema managements not to screen the film after the SGPC protest.
Mannan said that the SGPC will not allow this film to be screened in Punjab at any cost. If anyone tries to screen the film, the SGPC will protest again.
Meanwhile, SGPC member Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka and Bhai Ajaib Singh Abhyasi said that no anti-Sikh act will be tolerated and it is also the responsibility of the governments to respect the interests and sentiments of every religion.
SGPC secretary Partap Singh said that yesterday, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami had written a letter to Punjab Chief Minister asking him to ban this film in Punjab, but the tragedy is that the AAP government of Punjab is deliberately ignoring Sikh issues. This is not in the interest of the state, he said.
