Ludhiana, December 23
In an extraordinary surgical feat, Aykai Hospital has successfully performed a cadaveric kidney transplant (kidney taken from donor after its death), offering a new lease of life to a 42-year-old woman from Ludhiana. The patient had been suffering from end-stage renal disease for 1.5 years, enduring a poor quality of life due to regular dialysis. She spent three days a week traveling to a dialysis center, which caused immense physical, emotional, and financial strain on the family.
The kidney was retrieved from a 57-year-old brain-dead female patient on ventilator support. Her family’s compassionate decision to donate her organs turned a tragedy into a life-saving opportunity. The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) promptly alerted Aykai Hospital enabling the transplant team to prepare the recipient swiftly.
Upon receiving the alert, three potential recipients were identified and prepared for the transplant. Each patient’s medical compatibility was carefully assessed to ensure the best match. After detailed evaluation, the kidney was allocated to the senior-most patient on the waiting list with the best matching criteria. Throughout the process, relatives waited anxiously, hopeful for the life-changing outcome.
Dr. Baldev Singh Aulakh, Chief Urologist and Transplant Surgeon at Aykai Hospital, emphasized the importance of timely action, stating, “The kidney was transplanted within three hours of retrieval, significantly improving the patient’s prognosis. This reflects our hospital’s readiness and expertise in conducting complex surgeries at any hour.”
Addressing the general public, Dr Aulakh said, ‘Aykai Hospital provides 24/7 emergency cadaveric transplant services, encouraging the people to consider organ donation as a life-saving gift and ensuring timely care for patients in need.’
