Ludhiana, December 9

Deputy Commissioner Jitender Jorwal inaugurated the all-weather swimming pool at Sutlej Club here on Sunday late evening.

The Deputy Commissioner was very much impressed after seeing the swimming pool. He lauded Executive Members of Sutlej Club specially sports secretary Dr Sulbha Jindal with whose initiative the project was launched.

DC congratulated everyone on the successful launch of the project. He termed the setting up of an all-weather swimming pool a significant milestone for the club.

On the occasion, the club’s sports secretary Dr Sulbha Jindal said it is a 25 metres pool. The poll has a retractable roof which will provide ventilation during summers and can be covered to safeguard from cold in winters. There are three filter plants available to clean water without the need for replacement, thereby conserving water. Besides, two heat pumps are there to maintain a temperature of 29 degree to 32 degree Celsius. There exists a 100KV solar plant, therefore, there is no added burden on the club for electricity bills.

Adding, Dr Sulbha Jindal said the foundation stone of this project was laid in 2001. The project has been completed at a cost of around Rs.1 Crore. She said the Club Members were demanding this kind of pool for over 25 years.  She thanked the then Deputy Commissioners Surabhi Malik and Sakshi Sahni and ADC Amarjeet Bains who extended their full cooperation for the project.

She said they faced a lot of hurdles in completing the project but thanked MP (Rajya Sabha) Sanjeev Arora for helping and overcoming all the obstacles. She said MP Arora not only assured full support but he was always there and used to discuss in routine about the materials being used, technology of heat pumps, electricity requirement and other operational details. She said MP Arora was up to date with the progress and was very keen that it should be completed and operational at the earliest.

Further, she said all the executive members, especially the general secretary, were very supportive of the project and everyone worked together. She said some work was done by Dr Rohit Dutta who was the then general secretary and some pipes were laid in his tenure.

Dr Sulbha Jindal said she was a national level swimmer in school and college and was brought into swimming by MP Arora’s father Late Pran Arora.  She pointed out that all Punjabis have limitations to perform well in swimming competitions due to non-availability of an all-weather pool. “We had to discontinue swimming in winters due to which we lacked stamina”, she said, adding,” Now, atleast our club members and their children can swim for all 12 months.” She said senior citizens for whom aqua exercises are the only activity they can do comfortably are extremely happy and they have been very supportive and encouraging.

She thanked all members who chose her and brought her to the post of sports secretary so she could fulfill this long lost dream. She specially thanked city’s leading industrialists Onkar Singh Pahwa and Kamal Oswal who had proposed her name in previously held elections to Sutlej Club.
