Fazilka Village leads in sustainable farming with paddy straw mulching

The Fact News Service
Fazilka, November 21

In a groundbreaking initiative, farmers in Fazilka district’s Diwan Kheda village are setting a new standard for eco-friendly agriculture by using paddy straw for mulching in kinnow orchards. This pioneering effort is spearheaded by Sarpanch Sunil Kumar, who has been instrumental in encouraging his fellow villagers to adopt this sustainable practice.

Under his guidance, villagers have been collecting and utilising paddy straw to mulch their orchards. This innovative technique curbs the harmful practice of stubble burning and significantly enhances soil health and moisture retention.

Chief Agriculture Officer, Dr. Sandeep Rinwa, lauded the initiative, stating, “Mulching with paddy straw offers multiple benefits, such as reducing soil temperature and minimising the need for frequent irrigation in kinnow orchards.”

Sarpanch Sunil Kumar, who is leading this initiative, shared his positive experience, “Mulching has notably improved the health of my kinnow orchard, and I am encouraging other farmers to follow this eco-friendly practice.”

To further promote sustainable farming, the village plans to organize monthly awareness camps in collaboration with the horticulture and agriculture departments. These camps will provide farmers with training on various allied activities and sustainable practices.

Given the extensive area under kinnow cultivation in Fazilka, this practice holds significant potential for reducing the adverse effects of heatwaves and lowering the irrigation frequency. By embracing these eco-friendly methods, Diwan Kheda village is setting a commendable example for others to follow.
