New Delhi, November 15
After an overnight mid-sea operation, a boat carrying more than 700 kg of methamphetamine, or simply meth, was apprehended off the coast of Porbandar, Gujarat, in a big narcotics seizure. According to officials, eight people on board the ship who identified themselves as Iranians have been taken into custody.
According to officials, they are being interrogated to determine the origin of the drugs and the destination of such a large shipment. Although its true value cannot be determined in a normal manner, it is believed to be between ₹2 and 5 crore.
The seizures were made as part of Operation Sagar Manthan, which was a coordinated effort by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), a federal anti-drug agency, and the Gujarat Anti-Terror Squad (ATS).
As authorities monitor the sea channels for drug smuggling, more searches are being conducted for suspicious vessels and more incoming drug consignments.
In order to learn more about the narcotics shipment, officials are also questioning the suspects.
The possibility that the narcotics came from Pakistan is also being looked into. Pakistan has been charged in a number of papers with smuggling drugs across the border to finance its terrorist operations.
Three weeks ago, a significant drug bust occurred in Gujarat when the Avsar Enterprise in Ankleshwar, Bharuch district, was found to have drugs worth over ₹250 crore. In a previous similar operation, pharmaceuticals valued at ₹5,000 crore were seized from the Aavkar pharmaceuticals Limited in Ankleshwar.
