Drug smugglers engaged in the business of sending opium to foreign countries opened fire on the raiding officials of Narcotic Control Bureau who were chasing the smugglers and seriously injured one courier person accompanying the bureau near village Sunerwal falling on Kapurthala –Kalasingia road on Wednesday night.
Senior Superintendent of Police Vatsala Gupta today confirmed the incident and said that police registered a case of attempt to murder against the drug smugglers and arms act on the complaint lodged by the officials of narcotic Bureau.
In a FIR lodged with Kapurthala police, the Bureau said that on a tip off they intercepted a parcel containing 500 grams of opium booked from Jalandhar to United Kingdom on March 18.
The Bureau officials accompanied by courier men raided the village Sunerwal falling in kapurthala and when they were nearing the village , they intercepted one maruti car and signalled it to stop but the car driver did not stop .On chasing the car , the occupants fled away under the cover of darkness leaving behind the car.
Afterwards they found that one car and a jeep were fast approaching towards them and the occupants fired 25-30 rounds of fire on the Bureau officials who had providential escape but one of the bullets hit the courier man following them in another car . The police said bullet hit his leg and injured him.
The injured identified as Vishal Sharma who runs a courier franchise was admitted in local hospital and later shifted to a hospital at Jalandhar .The injured is stated to be out of danger.
Police registered a case against Palwinder Singh and Iqbal Singh both resdents of Sunerwal of kapurthala and 8-10 unidentified persons under section 307, ,353,506,148,149 IPC and arms act.
Police parties have been despatched to arrest the accused said SSP.
