The General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee and former Union Minister Kumari Selja said that the farmers of Ambala and Yamunanagar districts are the most distressed from the BJP-JJP’s anti-farmer government.
The crops of these farmers have been destroyed twice in the last 7 months, but so far, they have not been compensated for the losses incurred due to floods. Now, the crops have been completely destroyed by hailstorms, and due to the strike of revenue officials, there are also clouds of crisis looming over procurement.
In a statement released to the media, Kumari Selja said that the recent hailstorms have caused the most damage to the farmers of Chhachhroli, Bilaspur, Sadhaura, Shahjadpur, Narayangarh, and Yamunanagar.
The mustard crop has been completely destroyed by the hailstorms. It is costing up to Rs 5,000 per acre to cut down the finished mustard plants. It is clear that even to remove the remaining remnants of the damage from the fields, farmers are having to borrow.
According to the survey of the Agriculture Department, 24,400 acres of crops have been completely destroyed by hailstorms in Ambala district, while 77,000 acres of crops have been destroyed in Yamunanagar district.
The most damage has been done to wheat, mustard, and sugarcane crops. Earlier, in July, Ambala and Yamunanagar farmers had already suffered from the floods, when their entire crops were destroyed.
Kumari Selja said that despite the occurrence of losses due to floods, farmers have not been provided any relief or compensation amount from the government till date.
Farmers were expecting to run their households with the sugarcane crop, but the sugar mill delays payment and never pays on time despite taking their sugarcane.
Due to consecutive losses in two crops, the capital invested by the farmers has already become zero, and there is no question of income. The former Union Minister said that due to the hailstorms, there is also a possibility of a crisis of fodder in the area. The fear of further deterioration of fodder due to the spoilage of sugarcane has also arisen.
Due to the lack of any income, dreams of farmers such as building houses or getting their children married have also been shattered. In such a situation, the state government should immediately arrange for prompt compensation of the losses incurred due to floods and arrange for immediate arrangements for the reimbursement of the current losses.
