10 mobiles, banned items found in 2 packets thrown over jail walls in Ferozepur

While dense fog has engulfed several parts of Northern India, throwing normal life out of gear, the unscrupulous and anti-social elements are active in throwing the packets inside the jail taking advantage of climatic conditions.

Taking advantage of dense fog days, ten mobiles and other banned items were seized during the search operation and unknown persons threw two packets inside the jail over the high walls. As many as 44 mobiles were found, during 16 days of the current year.

Despite the tight security arrangements in and outside the jail, the mobiles – the most wanted banned item – continued to reach to the prisoners, to remain in touch with the outer world for illegal means, losing the purpose of keeping the accused as punishment behind the bars. In such a state of affairs, the connivance of jail officials cannot be ruled out. The security at the entry points needs to be plugged besides banning the visitation from whom the mobiles are recovered as another punishment.

One mobile in the search operation was recovered from under trial prisoner Baljinder Singh in barrack number 1 and in one packet thrown inside the jail, two packets of cigarettes 3 packets of cool lip, six mobiles with batteries, 6 keypads and in the other packet one mobile with battery and SIM Card, 84 sachets of tobacco, two mobiles with battery but without SIM card and two chargers were found. Meanwhile, a case under the Prisons Act has been registered.

Earlier, the Ferozepur jail has been in highlight during the last year with the recovery of more than 500 mobiles besides other banned items and in an astonishing case of making of 43,000 calls from mobiles, by three drug smugglers, from the jail resulting in the arrest of seven officials and 4 smugglers involved in the scam. It is said that those arrested actively helped the inmates and did not take action when mobiles were recovered from them.

Weak security arrangements at the entry points, owing to the proximity of the central jail with a thickly populated area and outside open space are the reasons behind the reaching of mobiles inside the jail, which need to be strengthened.
