Sarpanch of village shot dead in Tarn Taran district

Two unidentified motorcycle-borne youth shot dead a village Sarpanch (headman) at village Chabbal here on Saturday. The assailants after killing the sarpanch escaped away.

Confirming the murder, police said that the deceased has been identified as Chabbal village Sarpanch Avan Kumar alias Sonu Cheema.

Police said that on Saturday, unidentified assailants pumped two bullets into Awan Kumar when he was sitting in the saloon for hair cutting. According to eyewitness one of the assailants came inside the saloon fired two gun shots from point blank range, came out and fled away with his accomplice who had already kept the bike’s engine in running mode.

Police said that immediately after the incident, Awan was shifted to a private hospital in Amritsar where he succumbed to bullet injuries today on Sunday.

So far, police were clueless about the accused as various police teams were working on it and a deep investigation was underway as CCTV footage of nearby cameras were being checked. It is said that Awan always carries a weapon with him but today he kept his weapon in the car parked outside the saloon.  At the time of crime no gunman was with him as he was having his own personal security but today his lapse costs life.
