“Jal Diwali-Women for Water, Water for Women” campaign has been launched by the state of Punjab under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) flagship schemes of the Government of India. Under this campaign, “Jal Diwali” is being celebrated from November 7 to 9.
Providing information on this initiative, Director of the Local Government Department, Uma Shankar Gupta, stated that in the first phase of the Jal-Diwali campaign, 10 water treatment plants in Punjab have been selected for visits by women self-help groups. These groups will tour the water treatment plants, learn about the functioning of water treatment plants and water testing facilities. This campaign aims to increase the inclusion of women through articles and souvenirs made by women self-help groups. The tours will be conducted by state and city-level officials of AMRUT and NULM.
The Director of the Local Government Department mentioned that on the second day of “Jal-Diwali,” teams from Municipal Councils in Faridkot, Mansa, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Nangal took more than 150 women from self-help groups to visit water treatment plants in these cities. Nodal officers explained the process and procedure of water purification to the visiting women, and they were also informed about the water quality testing protocol. The primary objective of the “Jal Diwali” campaign is to empower women and increase their participation in the management of water resources.
Blue bags, water bottles, and Steel glasses were distributed to the visiting guests as gifts, and refreshments were arranged as a token of gratitude for their visit.
