Rashtriya Swam Sevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday called on popular actor Mithun Chakraborty at his residence in Malad West here. The entire family of the actor was present during the two-hour meeting.
It is not yet known what happened during the tea party on Tuesday morning, but the meeting ahead of the Assembly elections in West Bengal has fueled speculation that Mithun Chakraborty has joined the BJP. After a gap of 5 years, they can return to active politics.
Mithun, a former Rajya Sabha member from the Trinamool Congress, resigned in 2016 citing ill health. He had recently met Bhagwat in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, the two had also met at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur. Regarding the meeting, Chakraborty said, “Don’t guess, Bhagwat and I have a spiritual connection.” We both met in Lucknow and I appealed to him to meet me when he came to Mumbai.
On the question of ending his political retirement, Mithun said, “You are linking the meeting to my return to politics because elections are coming up in West Bengal.” If there was no election time, you wouldn’t do that. In Mumbai, RSS officials said the meeting was completely private and should not be linked to anything else.
