Rupnagar, May 23
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday demanded Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh to waive off power bills and offer financial package to most affected sections of the society. Sukhbir said it was unfortunate that chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh was impervious to the suffering of Punjabis and was refusing to give them any relief be it waiving off power and water bills for a six month period or offering a comprehensive package to skilled workers, small shopkeepers and taxi, auto and rickshaw operators. The SAD President was here to inaugurate a 25 bed Covid Care centre established by the Shiromani Committee which is equipped with oxygen concentrators. SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur was also present on the occasion besides former minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema who disclosed that the local branch of the India Medical Association (IMA) had also offered to volunteer its services at the Covid Care Centre. Speaking about the manner in which the Congress government was handling the Covid crisis, Sukhbir Badal said “the Congress party is busy in fighting for the top chair instead of fighting Covid. The SAD has been appealing to the chief minister to provide some relief to the people who have suffered immensely due to prolonged lockdowns but it seems as if we are talking to stones”. He said the government had also failed to get its act together on the healthcare front despite recording the highest mortality rate in the country with 13,000 persons succumbing to the disease including 3,000 in the last one month alone. “The government has refused to encourage people to come forward and get treated by offering free medical treatment in private hospitals as the facilities available in the government sector are not adequate. Similarly, our plea to establish Covid Care centres at the block level on the pattern done by SGPC at seven places has also fallen on deaf ears”. He also announced that Covid patients and their families were being provided packed food free of cost in 65 constituencies and appreciated Dr Daljit Cheema for being the first to start this initiative. The SAD President also appealed to all people stricken by Covid to take medical advice immediately and not to delay treatment, saying doing so could prove to be very dangerous.
