Kheri Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Punjab Agricultural University in association with Farm Advisory Service Center Sangrur conducted a three-day training course for the farmers of village Khilrian on proper management of paddy straw. On this occasion, Dr. Mandeep Singh, Assistant Director (Training) discussed with the farmers the benefits of handling the straw in the field without burning it.
He said that storage of straw in the field does not pollute the environment and increases the number of friendly insects and micro-organisms in the field. The application of straw in the field increases the organic matter of the soil and reduces the use of chemical fertilizers. Dr. Buta Singh Romana Head Farm Advisory Center said that handling of paddy straw is the need of the hour. He also urged the farmers to harvest paddy from Super SMS combine harvesters. He said that with this kind of harvesting the straw thrown back by the combine can be spread like a fine dog. After which wheat can be sown with Happy Cider or Super Cider machines without burning straw.
Progressive farmer Gurinder Singh Kanoi encouraged the farmers present not to burn straw and shared his experiences of sowing wheat with Happy Cider for 7 years.
