Punjab, November 6

Former Punjab Congress presidents Pratap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dulo once again showed rebellious attitude. All Punjab MPs had a proposed meeting with Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Thursday to urge them to run freight trains. Earlier, both the MPs met the Railway Minister and handed over the memorandum to him. After this, when the delegation of eight MPs reached to meet the Railway Minister at the appointed time, he flatly refused to run the freight trains saying that the trains would not be run till the tracks were cleared.
Bajwa and Dulo did not even join the dharna of Punjab ministers and MLAs led by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. In a three-page memorandum, the two demanded immediate restoration of movement of freight trains from Punjab citing shortage of coal in thermal plants and shortage of compost for farmers due to non-operation of freight trains.
Meanwhile, eight Punjab MPs in a meeting with the Railway Minister also cited the problem of power generation in the state and the scarcity of fertilizer for farmers in the Rabi season. He said that due to non-availability of essential goods, inflation is also on the rise. Besides, the farmers have also announced not to stop the freight trains. They are sitting on only two railway tracks leading to private thermal plants. On this, the Railway Minister made it clear that freight trains will not run till all the tracks in Punjab are completely cleared. He said that the state government should also take responsibility for the safety of all trains. Given this attitude of the Railway Minister, now the MPs have taken the time to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah on November 7.
