Chandigarh, November 22

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday succeeded in ending the complicated situation on the matter of stopping the rail services in the state, when the farmer unions announced to end all rail stops on Monday (November 23) at the request of the Chief Minister. With this, two months later, the way was cleared for both the passenger and goods trains to run again. Soon after the announcement, the chief minister appealed to the central government to restore all railway services in the state and further negotiate with the peasant representatives to resolve the crisis arising due to agricultural laws.

The decision to lift the rail stop was announced by the Indian Farmers Union (Rajewal) chief Balbir Singh Rajewal after the meeting of the farmers unions representatives with the Chief Minister. The meeting was held by the Chief Minister to resolve the complex situation arising out of the rail blocks imposed by the farmers in protest against the central agricultural laws. However, Mr. Rajewal warned that if the central government failed to negotiate with the farmer representatives in the next 15 days, then the rail stops would be restored.

Thanking the farmer unions for accepting his request, the Chief Minister assured the farmer leaders that he would meet the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister soon to press for their demands. He said, “Let’s unite and pressurize the center and explain how this central law will destroy Punjab.” He assured that he (Chief Minister) is with him in the struggle of farmers. He said, “We all have a blood in the veins.” Captain Amarinder Singh promised the farmers that he would also see their other demands, including increase in sugarcane price, payment of dues and cancellation of FIRs in respect of burning of residue. He said that he will discuss these issues in the next one week and will constitute a committee of officials to discuss the matter.
