Protest held by ‘Safai Sevak Union’, burnt effigy of Punjab CM

On the call of the Safai Sevak Union in support of the demands, the Safai Sevaks of the Municipal Council, who were on strike for the last 22 days, demonstrated on Friday and raised slogans against the government of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Avinash Chander, President of Safai Sevak Union Kurali, led by Shiv Kumar, Safai Sevaks took out the funeral procession of Captain Amarinder Singh. The yatra started from the City Council office and reached the Traffic Lights Chowk on the National Highway where the Safai Sevaks duly broke the pot and raised slogans of Captain Amaridar Murdabad. After this, the funeral procession reached Morida Marg via Mata Rani Chowk, Sabzi Mandi, Main Bazaar, Shri Nagarkheda Mandir, Railway Road to Ropar Road and returned to the City Council office, where Captain Amarinder Singh’s effigy was cremated and handed over to the fire. Avinash Chander, President of the Safai Sevak Union Kurali, Shiv Kumar said that since October last year, the struggle is going on for the demands like increasing the salary of the Safai Sevaks by making sure them, closing the contracting system. Demand letter in this regard has been handed over to the Chief Minister’s PA several times. In the era of inflation, only eight thousand rupees are being given to the raw ‘safai sevaks’, which is insufficient. He said that Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh himself takes rest in his hotel located in Siswan and he is completely unaware of the condition of the Safai Sevaks outside. Shiv Kumar, vice-president of Safai Sevak Union Punjab, said that the strike would continue till the demands were not resolved. On Friday, City Council President Ranjit Singh Jeeti declared the demands of the Safai Sevaks as justified and announced their support.
