The Face of Emerging Punjab. Evolution from an Industrial township to the Commercial hub, the jewel in the crown – The Fact News
In a Special Feature the Fact News team has traced the evolution of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar commonly known as Mohali from a small hamlet to an Industrial town to the most thriving District of Punjab. Initially an Industrial extension to Chandigarh, with allotment of Industrial plots to Big Cos. like Punjab Tractors Limited, Punjab Communications Ltd., Punjab Wireless and many more SMEs to be actually called Silicon Valley and Electronic township of Punjab in the early 1980s. After Punjab faced a tough decade, Mohali again emerged as an IT cluster and Commercial hub with the advent of the 21st century.
We talked to those at helm of the Mohali Industries Association over the years and the Office bearers at the Mohali Civic bodies and the Punjab Town Planning Experts who all contributed immensely to the growth of this city. What came out clearly was that the proactive role of Municipalities, more progressive bye laws, a convenient base for people from all regions of Punjab and an inherent attraction for NRIs due to close proximity to Chandigarh, all worked in favour of Mohali’s rapid development. It’s place in history for Khalsa Victories of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur ji was also commemorated with the construction of the Fateh Burj Monument, which today stands taller than the Qutab Minar.
Today Mohali boasts of the International Airport, the PCA stadium , Hospitals like Fortis, Max, Higher Education Institutes like the ISB, IISER, NIPER and many more, Integrated Townships and High rise Complexes and Communities along 300 ft wide expressways, all of which give a very Cosmopolitan feel to the City. With Mohali’s new expansion in New Chandigarh with its upcoming EduCity, Medicity, New Stadiums and all Real Estate developers, it is fast becoming the Jewel in the Crown of this region.
