The highest price of sugarcane in the country is being provided in Haryana. Keeping proactive approach to protect the interests of the sugarcane farmers, Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal has decided to increase the price of sugarcane to Rs 362 per quintal which has been increased by Rs 12 per quintal. Notably, this increased rate of sugarcane is not only more than Punjab but has become the highest price in the entire country.
This information was shared by the Haryana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, J.P. Dalal while interacting with the media persons after the meeting of Sugarcane Control Board. Cooperation Minister, Dr. Banwari Lal was also present during the meeting. Agriculture Minister said that the price of sugarcane has been increased after the approval of Chief Minister to protect the interests of sugarcane farmers in the State.
The situation of sugarcane farmers, sugarcane mills, sugar prices and other matters were discussed in the meeting. Dalal said that as per the decision taken by the State Government, Rs 362 per quintal will be provided for early maturing varieties of sugarcane while Rs 355 per quintal will be provided for late maturing varieties of sugarcane which was Rs 340 per quintal earlier.
He said that due to poor quality of sugarcane last year, the recovery of all private and cooperative sugar mills has been depreciated by 0.34. This time the recovery has decreased from 10.58 to 10.24. He said that it has been observed that the variety of sugarcane like 0238 being sown these days is having diseases. Therefore, agricultural scientists have developed 15023 new variety of sugarcane after discussing with the scientists of the Union and Haryana Agricultural University.
He said that the sugar recovery from the sugarcane currently being sown is generally around 10.50 per cent, while the expected recovery of newly developed variety i.e. 15023 is around 14 per cent. He said that efforts will be made to reach this variety to the farmers at the earliest and 30 percent increase in sugarcane production is also expected. Besides farmers, the sugar mill and the state government would also get benefit after the introduction of new sugarcane variety.
Similarly, in view of the efforts being made by the scientists, Dalal said that the Agriculture Department would soon provide land to the scientists to produce more and more new varieties of sugarcane seeds so that the new variety of seeds could be made available to the farmers at the earliest.
He said that this time all sugar mills have been directed to operate in the first week of November so that farmers can get their crops crushed on time. He said that farmers would get more profit by running the sugar mill early and they would be able to sow their next crop.
The Agriculture Minister said that this time more sugarcane will be allotted to all sugar mills as compared to last year and the capacity of any sugar mill will not be reduced. He said that Haryana is excelling in sugarcane production. He said that 100 percent payment has been made to all sugar mills except one sugar mill in Naraingarh. He said that the State Government has been making every possible effort to timely provide payment of sugarcane to the farmers.
Dalal said that Haryana would probably be the only state which has been using its budget for the payment of farmers. In this direction, a subsidy of Rs 192 crore was provided last year to revive the mills from losses.
Referring to Punjab, he said that the price of sugarcane in Punjab was Rs 310 for the last 4 years which has now been increased by Rs 50 due to the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab.
Dalal said that the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi took farmer-friendly decisions yesterday by increasing the prices of crops. He said that direct payment of crops in the accounts of farmers is being made by the State government.
He said that no neighboring state has more farmer friendly policies than Haryana. Policy decisions are taken in the interest of farmers whether it is about micro irrigation and Fasal Bima Yojana. Ganaur market is being set up in Haryana is the biggest market in entire Asia. Similarly apple market will also be set up in Pinjore, flower market in Gurugram and modern spice market in Sonepat. He said that every year, the State Government provides subsidy of Rs.200 crore to the farmers for purchasing agricultural equipments.
During the meeting, the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister and the Cooperation Minister directed the concerned officers to explore the possibilities of reviving sugar mills from losses. Ethanol plants should also be set up in the respective mills at the earliest. Similarly, more products like jaggery and shakkar should also be prepared in the mills. In addition to this, the problems of various sugarcane farmers were also addressed in the meeting.
In the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary, Cooperation Department, Sanjeev Kaushal, Additional Chief Secretary, Finance, Mr. T.V.S.N Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, Dr. Sumita Misra and Director General, Hardeep Singh, Managing Director, Haryana State Cooperative Federation of Sugar Mills, Jitender Kumar, Secretary, Cooperation Department, A.Sreenivas, non-official members of the Sugarcane Control Board and other senior officers were also present.
