Former don Mukhtar Ansari taken to UP’s Banda jail, known for high-profile inmates

The gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari taken to Uttar Pradesh’s Banda Jail, with high security. After all paperwork and medical test, he was shifted to ambulance from Ropar Jail. A 150-member team of UP Police had on Monday left for Punjab to bring back the gangster-turned-politician who is facing trial in several cases. Around seven vehicles of the Uttar Pradesh Police reached the Rupnagar District Police Lines around 4:30 am Tuesday, it was reported. BSP MLA Mukhtar Ansari’s wife moved the Supreme Court seeking security and protection for her husband while he’s shifted from Punjab’s Ropar jail to Banda jail in Uttar Pradesh. She urged the top court to pass necessary directions for Ansari’s security in prison and when he’s produced before courts. She also wanted the court to ensure a free and fair trial.
About Banda Jail
Mukhtar Ansari will be kept in barrack number 15 of Banda jail in Uttar Pradesh. Banda jail is often referred to as “kaala paani” (the other name for the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the British rule) as several dreaded criminals, dons and dacoits of the Chambal Valley have been lodged in this prison. This prison has a capacity of housing 600 inmates. But around 1,200 prisoners, including undertrials, are lodged in the Banda jail currently. Not only Ansari but the likes of Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, Anil Dujana, Purushottam Naresh Dewedi, Atiq Ahmad and Sundar Bhati, who are feared in their areas, hate the jail On March 26th, Supreme Court had ordered the transfer of Mukhtar Ansari to jail in UP from Punjab to face trials there.
While dismissing Ansari’s plea to transfer the cases pending against him in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi, the top court had said that he shall be lodged in Banda Jail where the Jail Superintendent will extend him necessary medical facilities.
