Expressing grave concern over the suicides of debt-ridden farmers in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stated that the policies of Captain Amarinder Singh-led state government were causing darkness in the homes of the people. In a statement, AAP‘s Majha zone joint secretary Baljeet Khehra said that there were heart-wrenching reports of farmers committing suicide on a daily basis due to debts, which had devastated people’s homes. Expressing grief over the suicide of a debt-ridden farmer Jarnail Singh from Gujjarpur village in Tarn Taran, Khehra said that a year prior, Jarnail Singh’s elder son had also committed suicide as he was not able to pay his debt. He said that Captain Amarinder Singh had promised the people that he would waive the debts of the farmers of Punjab after coming to power, but after four years Captain had not done anything for them. He said that just like during the SAD-BJP government, the farmers of Punjab were committing suicide due to debt, similarly, the Captain government was also not supporting them and the situation remains the same. “Frequent farmer suicides show that Captain Amarinder Singh’s government has betrayed the farmers of Punjab. It shows that the pro-farmer stance being taken by the Captain government is nothing but a facade,” said Khehra. He further said that the Captain government had come to power by making big promises to the people of Punjab and out of hope the people voted for them. “Once the Captain government came to power, they neither fulfilled their promises nor did they try to change the system. They in-fact promoted corruption and negligence,” he added. Khehra said that continuous reports were surfacing of farmers committing suicide because of the excessive debt burden on them. He said that these farmers had voted for the Captain government because they had made a large promise of loan waiver but sadly did not deliver. He said that a few days back, a farmer father-son from a nearby village of Dasuya had committed suicide. “Despite these deaths, leaders from the Captain government seem to be unmoved by the pain of the people,” he added. He said that the Captain government was not just a government of lies but also a government of negligence. “Their negligence caused great loss to the family. This shows the level of pain the Congress leaders feel about the people of Punjab. This is the level of care they have for the farmers of Punjab,” he added. The AAP leader further said that instead of filling the pockets of their loved ones, the Captain government should hold the hands of the debt-laden farmers as per its promise and waive all their debts. Khehra said that the people of Punjab would retaliate against Captain Amarinder Singh in the forthcoming 2022 assembly elections, for not fulfilling his promises made during the last elections. He said that the Aam Aadmi Party had been fighting the battle of the farmers. “The AAP will always fight for the demands of the farmers at every level,” he added.
