Tension gripped Sanaur village in Patiala district on Sunday after a policeman’s hand was chopped off and two other police officials were injured when a group of people allegedly attacked them in the wee hours of Sunday.

The incident resulted in a standoff between the police and miscreants involved in the attack who took refuge in a local gurdwara. Senior police officials, on public address system, were seen urging the gurdwara authorities to hand over the miscreants involved in the attack. Latest reports suggest that three Nihangs involved in the violence have been arrested.

Policemen in civil dress accompanied by local religious heads entered into the Gurdwara and convinced the miscreants to surrender.

Earlier, a police party on duty at Sanaur vegetable market was attacked by a group of five ‘Nihangs’, armed with swords and iron rods. The group was travelling in a vehicle and they were asked to stop at the vegetable market by Mandi board officials, they said.

The tiff began when they were asked to show their curfew pass. “They were asked to show curfew passes. But they crashed the vehicle against the gate and barricades put up there,” Mandeep Singh Sidhu, SSP, Patiala, said. The group then attacked the police personnel on duty, he said.

An Assistant Sub-Inspector’s hand was chopped off by a sword, while two others sustained injuries on their elbows and arms, Sidhu said.
