In view of the rising COVID-19 cases in the country, Capt Amar Jeet Singh, Convenor of Voters Protection Forum (Retd) has written to the Election Commission of India, urging the latter to conduct all the elections through ballot paper in all the poll-bound states.

Voters Protection Forum is an organization that works to protect the right of voters.

In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, Kharar-based Capt Amar Jeet Singh wrote that to avoid the big risk to the lives of voters, the ECI must rise to the occasion and conduct these elections in all states through Ballot.

” It is very thoughtful of ECI for issuing notification and dates of elections. More than politicians, the people will get exposed to a bigger risk of contracting the deadly Omicron virus due to the rapier use of EVMs. The voter is required to press the button of choice to cast votes, by repeatedly pressing the buttons of EVMs there are very fair chances to be infected by this deadly virus. Besides, there is only one EVM in a polling booth which takes a long time and the crowd remains waiting, and with the social distancing maintaining in a queue will aggravate the risk further,” wrote Environmentalist Capt Amar Jeet Singh (Retd)

“To avoid the big risk to the lives of voters, the ECI must rise to the occasion and conduct these elections in all states through Ballot. Unlike EVMs, there can be many Ballot Booths in one polling station making separate booths for differently-abled, super senior citizens and sick voters which is not possible in EVMs voting. The question is not costing the votes safeguarding the lives of voters. This is an emergent condition and it is the responsibility of the ECI to make these extraordinary arrangements,” he added.

He also requested CEC to make the provision of the Ambulance nearby the booth to handle the case of any emergency.

“There must be the provision of posting an Ambulance vehicle in the area having multiple election booths to attend any emergency. The way this virus is spreading, it will be much safer to allow only virtual election rallies, and why only up to 15 January? Voters will be taking a very big risk without any personal gains out of this process because the governments in the past have let him down by taking anti-people decisions therefore innocent and helpless voter will be using their constitutional right to get harmed more and more. The buck stops at ECI to conduct the election safe,” he further added.
