During the Anti-tobacco fortnight drive in the district, Dr.Rajinder Arora, Civil Surgeon said, “Tobacco is the cause of many deadly diseases, so choose life, not tobacco.
Every year, on 31 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) and global partners celebrate World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness of the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.
Speaking at the awareness meeting was organized on Thursday at Govt. Sr.Sec School (Boys), District Health Officer Dr. Ravi Ram Sharan Khera said, the appropriate activities are being carried out by the health department for implementation of COTPA – Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act 2003. He said, under the Food Safety Act 2003 and Food Safety Standard Act 2006, the product containing tobacco and nicotine has been banned in the state
He further said that smoking in public places is a punishable offense and from time to time the department challans are also issued. He further revealed that tobacco use kills millions of people worldwide with cancer every year. Thus, it is so important for people to be aware of the dangers of smoking. In the case of Covid-19, where reduced immunity to smoking is fatal in Corona cases, people who chew tobacco by mouth have to spit repeatedly, which is one of the two leading causes of Corona disease.
DHO said that the services of specialist doctors for smoking cessation are available free of cost at District Hospital Ferozepur. Free counseling and medication are provided. He also said that with strong willpower and proper medical treatment, one can get rid of the bad habit of smoking.
