Bollywood movies scheduled to release this year may shift to digital platforms

Many movies that were scheduled to release now have been postponed because of the ongoing lockdown. The theatres all across the country are shut. Therefore, some big releases have been shifted to digital streaming platforms which are considered as the saviors for the film industry amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As per the reports, many Bollywood filmmakers and production houses are heading towards streaming platforms rather than waiting for cinemas to reopen.

Amitabh-Ayushmann starrer ‘Gulab-Sitabo’, Shakuntala Devi’s biopic and another movie of Amitabh, ‘Chehre’ amongst the movies which are likely to release on streaming platforms.

Sources told PTI that the deals for ‘Gulab-Sitabo’and Shakuntala Devi’s biopic’s release on Amazon Prime Video have been locked. Also, the official release dates for both of them choices are likely to be announced this week.

When PTI reached Ronnie Lahiri, producer of ‘Gulab-Sitabo’, to ask about it, he did not deny it and said the journalists that they need to wait for the official announcement.

The same happened when journalists reached the team involved in ‘Shakuntala Devi’. They also did not comment on the film’s digital release.

The producer of ‘Chehre’ also reportedly said that they were considering the release of the movie on an online platform.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s ‘Ghoomketu’ will release on Zee 5 on May 22. The sources suggest that the list of movies to be released on streaming platforms this year is very long.

Akshay Kumar’s ‘Laxmmi Bomb’ has been reportedly picked up by Disney+Hotstar. Before the lockdown, it was scheduled to be released on May 22. But now, there are no signs of cinemas opening.

‘Coolie No 1’, ‘Jhund’, ‘Gunjan Saxena’ are also likely to be released on different streaming platforms. ‘Coolie No 1’ was scheduled to be released on May 1. Movie’s producer Jacky Bhagnani reportedly said, “Let us overcome this crisis and we will announce in happier times.”

However, Reliance industries have said that they would wait to release Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sooryavanshi’ and Ranveer Singh starrer ’83’.
