Former minister Bikram Singh Majithia today while condemning the murderous attack on former Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator Manjit Singh Manna and the inability of the State police to arrest the accused since the last three days, said the patronage being given to gangsters by the Congress government had led to a complete breakdown in the law and order situation in the State.
Addressing a press conference here along with Manjit Manna, the former minister said Manna was attacked in front of his house by a Congress goon who fired at him in broad daylight after abusing the SAD leader and challenging him to come out of his residence. “It is three days since the murderous attack. The attacker has been identified as a history-sheeter – Sarabjit Singh Sabba who has a long list of crimes against his name including kidnapping, extortion, and theft. Still, Sabba and his cohorts are not being arrested because the local police are under intense pressure from the Congress legislator from Baba Bakala not to make any arrest in the case”.
Stating that the shootout at Minawind village in Baba Bakala in which Manjit Manna was targeted for murder was a direct result of the patronage given to notorious gangsters who had been made State guests in jails in Punjab, Majithia said “the Congress policy of appeasement of gangsters in the hope of using them to settle political scores is having an adverse effect on the law and order situation in the State. Punjab is witnessing shootouts by gangsters who are openly claiming of their misdeeds on the social media”.
Asking the Congress government to reset its priorities, Majithia said “it is shocking that instead of defending the river waters issues properly in the apex court, the Congress government is spending Rs 50 lakh on hiring a top lawyer to ensure an Uttar Pradesh gangster is not repatriated to his parent State. The gangster is obviously being kept in Punjab so that he can be misused in the 2022 assembly elections”, the SAD leader. He said the government had earlier also given VVIP treatment to gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria even as the Jails minister was fond of taking advice on how to run the jail administration from another notorious gangster.
Answering a query, Majithia thanked Congress legislator Pargat Singh for speaking his mind and telling the truth about the sand and liquor mafias in the State besides making it clear that people won’t vote for Congress in the name of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh or Pradesh Congress President Sunil Jakhar. He said the PCC president had also proved that he did not have faith in the Governor’s Address and even no confidence in the coming State budget and that was why he had announced to hold a ‘dharna’ on the same day. He said Jakhar was also crying crocodile tears on the issue of petrol and diesel prices. “The truth is that the more the center hikes the prices of petroleum products, the more money the Punjab government gets on account of VAT which increases proportionately. The Congress government is playing a fixed match with the center on the issue of petrol and diesel prices and is refusing to reduce its VAT quotient to give relief to the common man”, the SAD leader added.
