After the crisis in Puducherry, now Congress is also feeling crisis in Punjab. Congress state president Sunil Jakhar had to take a U-turn from his statement following the outrage among party legislators. After winning the local body elections, State President Sunil Jakhar had called Captain Amrinder Singh as the face of the Chief Minister for the 2022 assembly elections. After the voices of Opposition in the party, now Jakhar said that after the victory in the Vidhan Sabha elections, only the MLAs and the party high command will decide for the chief minister. The remarks made by Congress MLA Pragat Singh, close to Navjot Singh Sidhu, have put the high command in worry. MLA Pragat has said, “Who is Sunil Jakhar to decide who will be the face in the upcoming assembly elections.”
In four years of Punjab Government, two Rajya Sabha members of the Congress, Pratap Singh Bajwa, and Shamsher Singh Dulo, apart from a few other MLAs have repeatedly targeted their own government. There has been a stir of internal protests once again and that too at a time when the Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat has given a clear indication of re-joining Navjot Singh Sidhu in the Punjab Government. A week ago Punjab Congress President Sunil Jakhar had said during an organized Press conference in Chandigarh that people had given their mandate once again in favour of Captain Amrinder Singh and the face for next Assembly election will be Captain Amrinder Singh again. Jakhar even released a poster ‘CAPTAIN FOR 2022’.
Voices against the remarks of Jakhar started raising again. Some MLAs of Congress on the condition of anonymity told that complaints have been sent to party high command against State President Jakhar.
Congress MLA and former captain of the Indian hockey team Pragat Singh has once again has raised objections against the statement of Sunil Jakhar. He said that party did not do well as expected during four years and people will think once before polling in favour of Congress. He said who is Jakhar to declare the face for the next assembly election. Feeling the heat of the situation, State Congress President Jakhar had to take a u-turn from his own earlier statement. Today talking with the media, Jakhar now said that after winning, the MLAs will decide who will be their leader. Interestingly, Navjot Sidhu, who was seeking CM post and now decided to accept a little less than CM post, but the statement of State Party President has given rise to factionalism in the party.
