During the surprise checking of jail premises by a vigilant team headed by Sukhjindeer Singh, Assistant Superintendent, seven mobiles with and without battery and SIM cards were recovered. During the current year, as per the information, 204 mobiles have been recovered, including today’s recovery.
On frequent smuggling in of mobiles from inside jail and later on recovery by the vigilant staff, has put a question mark on the security arrangements at the entry points and the purpose of keeping the inmates away from the outer world as punishment is lost. The mobiles provide inmates the ability to make and receive unauthorized phone calls, send email and text messages, use social media and follow news pertaining to their case among other forbidden uses.
As per the details, during the surprise checking of block number 2 barrack number 5, two mobiles with battery but without SIM cards were recovered from the bathroom inside the barrack and two from the ‘roshandan’ – skylight. Another three mobiles were recovered with SIM cards and the battery kept hidden in the wall by making a place on removing the brick.
A case under Section 52-A Prisons Act has been registered Singh against the unidentified person and further investigations are on with Baldev Singh, IO.
